Burning Ban

ADVISORY: Polk County and the City of Lake Alfred now have an Ordinance prohibiting open burning in the City limits due to the current dry weather conditions. Permitting fires are those authorized by a state-issued permit or those contained in a grill or other approved pit. Residents cannot burn their yard trash or have campfires during this ban. There are penalties for violation of the ordinance as referenced in the Code of Ordinances Sections 1-14 and 34-5. If you see any open fires or other hazardous conditions, please report immediately to the Fire Department 863-291-5202.

Watering Restrictions

The City of Lake Alfred requires citizens to comply with the water restrictions set forth by the Southwest Florida Water Management District in order to conserve water consumption. The water conservation measures went into effect on January 16, 2007 and remain in place until June 30th, 2008.  The guidelines are as follows:

Lawn and Landscape Watering

  • Our county and city has a once-per-week schedule in to effect. If you were previously allowed to follow a twice-per-week schedule, you now need to follow the schedule shown below.

  • Properties under two acres in size may only water before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m.

  • Properties two acres or larger may only water before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.

  • Variances are available if a property proposes an alternative irrigation plan (such as splitting a large property into two pieces and assigning a different day to each piece).

  • Hand-watering or micro-irrigation on non-lawn landscape is allowed.

  • Certain exemptions are available, such as allowances for new plant material.

Addresses (house numbers) ending in the following numbers may only irrigate on:

Ending in 0 or 1 Monday                                  Ending in 2 or 3 Tuesday

Ending in 4 or 5 Wednesday                             Ending in 6 or 7 Thursday

Ending in 8 or 9 Friday

Golf Courses, Agricultural Operations and Other Water Users

  • Fountains and other aesthetic-only water features may only operate 8 hours per day.

  • Car washing is limited to once per week; fundraiser events are still allowed.

  • Comply with all Water Use Permit conditions including allowable drought quantities.

  • Reduce off-site discharge and mobile equipment washing.

  • Follow applicable best management practices, including watering times and applications.

The City of Lake Alfred thanks you for following the above guidelines.  If you have any questions please contact the Utilities Department at 863/291-5274 or visit the Southwest Florida Water Management website at www.watermatters.org
